In a pandemic world, we are taking the Tippie Women Summit virtual with a series of online programs in the month of March. All events are open to the public.  Individual registration is required for each event.  Recordings of past events are also available at the event link below.

The theme of this year's summit is “Power in Preservation”. Reflecting on Audre Lorde’s words: “Self-preservation “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence. It is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare," this year we are choosing to develop a summit where attendees can explore their identities and topics surrounding: awareness of needs as a means to create boundaries; guilt free ownership of self in all forms; celebration of existence – all allowing us to progress. This summit was created to center womxn of color while acknowledging their identities are multiplistic and encompass a variety of dimensions. We believe to be truly inclusive; we must ensure support and advocacy for all identities held by womxn of color. Our expectation is that students will be offered opportunities to engage with their identities and those of others within workshops, the keynote presentation, time for networking, and more. We will use these guidelines as we invite guests to engage with our students and share their experiences. 

Thanks to funding from the American Political Science Association (APSA)—and the vision and persistence of two Department of Political Science faculty members—female graduate students in international relations from around the country will travel to the University of Iowa campus in 2021 to share their scholarly research, network with their peers, and find support from women mentors in the discipline.

Loretta Ross, PhD HC, a nationally-recognized founder of the Reproductive Justice Movement, will be the keynote speaker. The virtual conference is free for all to attend and eligible for  CME & CE credits. All associated CME  and CE credits are provided at no charge courtesy of a grant funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). 

A coalition of diversity councils told University of Iowa's president that they are "severely disappointed and frustrated" with the campus' response, or lack of a response, to the Black Live Matter movement in an open letter Monday.

In 1940, Elizabeth Catlett became one of the first three MFA graduates from the University of Iowa and was the first African American woman to receive the degree. She would go on to become one of the most important American sculptors and printmakers of the 20th century.

Harriet B. Nembhard, the Eric R. Smith Professor of Engineering and head of the School of Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, has been named dean of the University of Iowa College of Engineering. She will begin on June 29.

The Jean Y. Jew Women’s Rights Award recognizes outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the UI; a longstanding record of leadership, effort, and activism; and accomplishments of national scope or impact.

"Celebration of Excellence and Achievement Among Women,” the University’s annual tribute to the accomplishments of all women at the UI, will be held Wednesday, April 10, 2019, 3:00-5:00 p.m. in the IMU 2nd Floor Ballroom. A social begins at 3:00 p.m. followed by the awards program at 3:30 p.m. The program is free and open to the public.
